Research by the Ohio Department of Education found that “students reading proficiently by the end of third grade are five times more successful at achieving college and career readiness as their non-proficient peers.” So, we want to get those readers on grade level and into some great books by third grade!

Third grade is a critical grade where students go from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” This means that basic decoding and phonics skills are phased out and students are expected to understand everything they read.

The Details:
Each month, I will pick 3 different books that are on a second, third grade, and fourth grade reading levels. You will pick the best book based on your child’s reading level. You can choose to purchase the book or get it from your local library.
Each week, your child is expected to read the assigned pages in their book. Once they are all logged into Zoom, you do not need to be there. Get your child logged in, then go make yourself a cup of tea and relax!
Each week, you will get a worksheet or two for your child to work through as they read the section of the book for the following week. It is expected that they read their section and come prepared to participate each week! The printables are meant to guide our discussions and help them focus while they are reading.

Who will your child be reading with?
Hi! I'm Kim. I knew from a young age that reading was my passion and wanted to pass along my love of reading to others. This led me to begin my career as an elementary school teacher and obtain my Masters of Education in reading from the University of Virginia.
Current reading research shows that one of the biggest predictors of reading success is an enjoyment of reading in school-aged children.
I have experience teaching a range of abilities (4th, 3rd, and 1st grades to be exact!). I tutored many different ages which has helped me develop reading adventures that everyone will love and learn from. I worked in small groups with struggling readers as a reading specialist.
I am excited to pick different books to read together, foster new reading relationships, and hopefully find a series or book your child will LOVE through this digital book club!

My child is in first grade. Can I register them for this book club?
The books I will be choosing for this book club are based on typical reading levels in second, third, and fourth grades. We will be increasing the difficulty of the texts as the year goes on. If your first grader is reading above grade level, they may be a good fit for the second grade book club. Please send me an email (kim@creativereadingadventures.com) or send me a Facebook message to chat before you enroll!
Some of these books are short. Are you really going to read them for the whole month?
Yes! Our first meeting we will preview the text. Please make sure your child has not read any part of the book for our first meeting (more details will be emailed when you enroll). I strategically break up the reading after that first book club time together. We will read sections of the book, working on fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skill based on the book.
MY CHILD CANNOT MAKE ONE OF THE DATES. DO YOU SEND A RECORDING?
I do not send recordings of our book clubs due for privacy reasons of the kids in our club! That being said, I have had some members skip a week or two and still feel a part of our group. As long as they catch up on the reading, your child will have no problems jumping in the following week!
